A Christmas Carol

I just finished reading it. Has anyone else read this one yet?

Okay, I'll post my comments, or at least some of them.

I have to say that my favorite part of the book was Dicken's description of Scrooge watching his nephew's family play Blind Man's Bluff. It was such an amusing, detailed and real description that I could almost imagine being there myself. I actually laughed out loud during some of it.

I admire how upon meeting the frightening ghost of Christmas future, Scrooge was brave and humble enough by that point to follow and learn the lessons the ghost had to teach him despite his fear. I think as Scrooge followed the ghost and listened in on conversations in the town about a man who had recently passed away, deep down he knew who they were talking about but hoped that it was not so. By that time he was so determined to change and avoid his fate he hoped the ghost would show him a new future.

I also thought it interesting that Dickens made the ghost of the future the most frightening of all. Are more people more afraid of what the future holds than the past or present? My guess is that they are. The past may be terrible for some, but it's over and done. I think the future can be daunting because fear really is just not knowing what is going to happen in the future.

A Start on A Christmas Carol

I have now read two pages of the book. I completely agree with Dickens when he says that the nail on a coffin would be much deader than a doornail, but who am I to change tradition? Although now that I think of it, the nail on a coffin is probably covered with all kinds of bacteria and maggots and such, so perhaps it isn't so dead after all. Sorry, I really am taking this seriously. Jackie, when do you find time to read?

Chimes revisited......Tintinnabulation....

I am making good headway...but struggling. Don't get me wrong its a good story; it just might be the 2am readings or kids bouncing around me or the 1800's English. But I am having a hard time gaining that wow factor.

I love the idiomatic expressions and the catchy phrases that stick in my mind like, "It's Tripe!". or the moiling Trotty who you get the feeling somethin lucullan is about to happen with Trotty Veck!

Tell me what you guys like so far and maybe that will help me get into it even more.

A Success and Some Failure

Well I at least have A Christmas Carol now. I don't know why the library has to keep it with the Christmas books instead of with the Charles Dickens books at the opposite end of the library, but after much searching and finally asking the librarian I found it. And I have to return it in 7 days because it's a holiday book, so you can rest assured that I won't be reading it the night before Christmas. (-;

As for the rest...I found a lovely book called Christmas Stories by Charles Dickens and not one of the thirteen stories in the book are one of the five listed in this blog. There is one called the Haunted House. They look like interesting stories, but alas, they are the wrong ones. Our library doesn't have any of the ones listed except for a Christmas Carol. I can download two of them online, but computers are for skimming, not curling up and reading. I may have to break down and buy the silly things. Oh well. At least I have one of them, eh?

Not Lame!!!!

No this is not lame!!!

But first of all, I would have been on here months ago raving about the book selection but some one or two didn't email me at my correct email, not going to mention any names Jackie and Cameron....I will will leave it at that....

I have the "Stories for Christmas" by Charles Dickens in leather back (but then again, just about every book I have is leather....). Its a fabolous read, at least what I have read thus far. But now I have a reason to burn through it! Its cheap...only $19 or so for the leather at BN. But always check http://www.booksprice.com/ first.

I will get started right now...You've got a head start so no excusses.

And the email is daniel.burgess@gmail.com

It's a Go!

So since there were no protests, we are going to be reading the 5 Dickens Christmas Books. The book that Cameron and I got has A Christmas Carol first, but Cameron keeps complaining about reading that one first, so we will read in this order:

The Chimes

The Cricket on the Hearth

The Battle of Life

The Haunted Man

A Christmas Carol

Hope you can all find these books, check the library or Barnes and Noble. We got ours from Amazon. Make sure the book you get has all five of them in it. We look forward to your comments.

A Christmas Carol

So I was trying to find a good book for us to start and was looking up Charles Dickens books, and come to find out A Christmas Carol is the first of 5 Christmas books by Dickens. They are A Christmas Carol, The Chimes, The Cricket on the Hearth, The Battle of Life, and The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain. So I thought maybe we could start now with A Christmas Carol and then see how many we can get through before Christmas. Barnes and Noble has the first 3 books combined in one for $5.95, and it is only 275 pages. Or they have all 5 in one for $6.98, and it is 496 pages. Let us know what you think.
